So, I have gotten Galciv II now, after having played Galciv a lot, but stopped a year or so ago. In Galciv we kinda had this "rule": Don't build on planets below PQ 15.

What do you guys do in Galciv II? Do you build on everything you come across, or is there a similar rule of thumb for Galciv II?

Cheers

Grab every planet possible. Though the higher PQ planets are prioritized.

low PQ planets are used for research (one factory, rest of the tiles research labs)
mid PQ planets are used for military production (1 starport and factories)
high PQ planets are used mainly for economy (farms, morale boosts, and markets)

Of course, those are just general guidelines, actual gameplay will change it.

The rule of thumb is probably: Do not build a farm on planets with PQ 6 or below. See the population article in galciv2 wiki.

A rule of thumb for GalCiv2 is build on everything you can.

Why a factory on an research planet?

That one factory really helps cut down production time of the research labs.

You make 1 factory, which cuts the build time in half to make your research labs, then you delete the factory and build your last lab.

Isn't that going to make upgrading the labs dificult?

I dont know about you guys but when it comes to colonizing planets on galciv2 I just GRAB GRAB GRAB everthing in reach that I can use, but first get the good planets

I used to grab low qual planets.

But now I only do so depending on the game difficulty and the location of the low qual planet.

I found that at lower difficulties, I just let the AI grab those... as long as you have sufficient cultural influence, they will most often flip. Especially if there's a high PQ planet nearby with your colony on it...

Else just plant an Influence StarBase and keep upgrading it till they flip... but thats for low-mid difficulty games. At higher difficulties (Challenging) I think it depends if you want to grab those and offer off as 'gifts' later on to appease the other AI should they do a Drengin...

Hmm....Thanks for the tips guys. I tend to evaluate the planets on a case by case basis now, however. For example, if a low quality planet has a 300% bonus production tile, then that planet becomes a production planet - etc.
